A bracken from Whitney in SC

Posted on |

Fern. I mistook it for a Christmas Fern somehow. And I’ve read through all my resources and I’m drawing a blank.

Hi Whitney,

this is called a bracken fern, Pteridium aquilinum.  It usually grows in areas that are a little drier and sunnier than Christmas fern, and does well in formerly burned forests.  Instead of having its fronds in a cluster, these ferns normally have a single leaf at a time on an underground stem.

I hope this helps!

Sincerely,

Steve Hill, Botanist, SCNPS
