Upstate field trip: Chestnut Ridge HP
March 19, 2015 @ 9:45 am - 3:00 pm
Optional carpool meets at 9:00 am.
Leaders: Bill Robertson, Lynne Scoggins, Bill Sharpton, and Dan Whitten
This is an outing for both photographers and non-photographers to enjoy the wildflowers of this nearby heritage preserve. The trail is of moderate difficulty up and over Squirrel Mountain. The photography group will hike in and out a total of 4 miles. Photographers should bring their camera gear and a tripod. Our leaders will give tips and advice on nature photography. Non-photographers will move more quickly along the trail, botanizing as we go, all the way to the Pacolet River for a total in and out hike of six miles. We can expect to see sweet betsy trillium, bloodroot, spring beauties, fire pinks, wild azaleas, trout lilies, and much more. Come for all or part of the day.
Meet at the trailhead parking area at 9:45 am. The HP is off Hwy. 11 at Oak Grove Road, Landrum, SC 29356. Go to https://www.dnr.sc.gov/mlands for directions and trail map. If you wish to carpool from Greenville, meet at 9:00 am at the McDonald’s at 5050 Old Buncombe Road, Greenville, in University Square shopping center.
Bring a lunch, water, and snacks. Wear hiking footwear, seasonal clothing and a hat. Hiking sticks are advisable as there are a few steep slopes. Lastly, bring a smile for our first NPS hike of the season!
