Sandhills Exploration

with Bruce Sorrie

Join eminent botanist Bruce Sorrie for a field trip to the Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge. Bruce spent many years inventorying and surveying habitats in North Carolina, predominantly within the longleaf pine ecosystem. He is the author of A field guide to the wildflowers of the Sandhills Region: North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.

Sandhills Exploration is an elective course. Pre-requisite: Basic Botany.

Location: Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge.

Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge is located approximately 70 miles northeast of Columbia, South Carolina, and 75 miles southeast of Charlotte, North Carolina. The main entrance is on US Highway 1, about 4 miles northeast from the small town of McBee. The nearest larger town with full services is Hartsville, SC.
(Its address is listed as “23734 U.S. Highway 1, McBee, SC” but that seems to confuse GoogleMaps. You might want to plug in the intersection of Visitors Drive and US Hwy 1.)
