Lowcountry: Plant Ecology in the Lowcountry: From Discovery to Recovery

March 21 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Joel Gramling, Citadel Herbarium Curator and Biology Department Head
The botanical history of the Lowcountry of South Carolina is filled with famous naturalists who named and categorized our flora while exploring a new realm. Over the last 300 years the Lowcountry has experienced significant cultivation and other alterations that have irrevocably transformed the landscape to produce the plant communities we see today. As we experience continued urbanization, how can plant ecology inform us about our landscape and the choices we need to make to preserve our natural resources? From historic discoveries to large-scale agriculture to the introduction of invasive species, local history is evident in today’s landscape and should direct modern ecologists going forward.
