Lowcountry Field Trip: Pocotaligo Carolina Bay

April 22, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Field Trip: Saturday, April 22 at 10:00am
(trip duration will be 2-3 hours)

Trip Details: Restoration of Pocotaligo Carolina Bay, Longleaf Pine, and Spring Wildflowers

Join us for a trek to just East of Manning, SC for a special outing led by Dr. Richard Porcher to visit the site of the Pocotaligo Carolina Bay that Dr. Porcher has restored.

As described in Wildflowers of South Carolina (2022), Carolina bays are, geological formations of unknown origin that form shallow depressions in sandy coastal soil mainly on the South Atlantic Coastal Plain Province of North America and are of significant ecological importance providing wetland habitats for a variety of animals in the surrounding uplands and are a wildflower paradise. We will have the chance to visit Dr. Porcher’s restored Carolina bay and longleaf pine habitats as well as look for Spring wildflowers.

Trip location: The field trip site is about a 2-hour drive from Charleston to the restored site near Manning, SC. Registered participants will meet at a designated meeting location and then follow Dr. Porcher to the Carolina bay and farm. Participants should arrive at the meeting location at 10am sharp, so please plan your travel accordingly.

Directions: The meeting location is near this address: 1015 N Brewington Rd, Manning, SC 29102 and you will look for a pink fire station.

Here are Dr. Porcher’s directions:
Take I-26 out of Charleston to Highway 52; follow Hwy 52 through Moncks Corner and past St. Stephen’s; cross Santee River and turn left on 375 to Greeleyville in Clarendon County; at Greeleyville 521 joins 375 and both continue through Greeleyville toward Manning, but do not go to Manning; you will come to Foreston right after Greeleyville; turn right on South Brewington Road at Foreston; South Brewington Road dead ends at 261 (Kingstree Highway); turn left and you will immediately see a pink fire station where North Brewington cuts right off 261; Meet here and everyone will then follow Dr. Porcher for the drive to the Carolina Bay and Farm.

What to Bring/Wear: Pack snacks/picnic lunch, water, sunscreen/hat, bugspray, field appropriate clothing and footwear (possibly that can get wet). There are restrooms at the cabin on the farm. We will be in the field for 2-3 hours.
