Lisa Matthews Memorial Bay prescribed burn
April 26, 2012
Volunteers who can help with a prescribed burn on the SCNPS Lisa Matthews Memorial Bay are needed. The burn is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, April 26, 2012, but is completely dependent upon specific weather conditions. In the event that the weather does not cooperate on the 26th, we hope to reschedule the burn one day the following week.
John Brubaker plans to be on site at 8:30 AM and remain through the following day. Volunteers may arrive and leave at your convenience. Our greatest need will be for fire watchers posted on the perimeter of the fire from about 10 AM until 4 PM Thursday. We’ll watch Highway 301 through Friday morning for smoke. Any help with that smoke patrol will be especially appreciated.
Wear work type field cloths, gloves, and boots for work on dry uplands. Bring water and lunch/snacks. Helpful tools include a shovel (preferably flat blade), garden hoe, or garden rake.
The Bay is on the west side of US Hwy 301 8.6 miles south of the intersection of US Hwy 78 and 301/601 in Bamberg. Traveling south from Bamberg on US Hwy 301 cross the Little Salkehatchie River. Shortly thereafter notice a church and road on the right. Stay on US Hwy 301, passing a couple of white steel forest gates to loblolly pines on well drained sandy soil on the right. The well drained ridge dips at the edge of our bay. Small trees and shrubs cut last fall are a prominent feature on the margins of the bay. As you come up from that dip look for a prominent sign with florescent crosshatching on the right. Immediately beyond that sign is the entrance to our property and the Bamberg Hunt Club.
Sign-up is not required, but it will be helpful to know if you plan to attend. Cell phone 843-708-8091, e-mail [email protected]. Phone reception at the bay is intermittent.
